Do you shoot in RAW? One good WB method is to take a measure off the palm of your hand, which is actually a neutral tone and balances well between blacks and whites.
But what an amazing shot in focus and location!

Funny you should mention the white balance. I was having an insane time trying to make photos come out while on location for the EXACT reason you mentioned. Next time I'll just shoot RAW and adjust the white balance in photoshop. Thanks for the input.
FYI, this was at Annette Lake (same exit as Granite Mountain) just before the snow REALLY started to come down! Great place. We were the only ones on location.
